Khao Khiri Wong Cave & Cave Temples Near Ban Krut

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

The hills around Bang Saphan hide several caves, and many have become quiet Buddhist shrines. Khao Khiri Wong is one local name that people still look for. Reliable, current details on it are hard to find, so this page is honest about what we know. It also points you to cave temples nearby that are well described and easy to reach.

What we know about Khao Khiri Wong

This old page covered a cave known locally as Khao Khiri Wong. We could not find a reliable, current source that describes the cave, its access or its opening times. So we give no directions here. If you want to find it, ask at your guesthouse in Ban Krut or at a local temple. Local people will know the way and whether it is open.

Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong: the easy choice

The best-documented cave temple in the district is Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong, about 2 km south of the Bang Saphan District Office. Its cave has stalactites, stalagmites, Buddha images and a golden reclining Buddha. A rock in the main hall looks like a horse's head and gives the temple its name. See our full guide to Khao Tham Ma Rong.

Tham Khao Phasadu in Bang Saphan Noi

Further south, Tham Khao Phasadu is a pair of natural caves in a limestone hill at Ban Nong Khla, Bang Saphan Noi district. It is a quiet, rural spot with little development. It lies about 4 km from Bang Saphan Noi railway station.

Visiting caves respectfully

Many caves here are active places of worship. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Take off your shoes where others do, speak quietly and do not touch Buddha images or formations. Monks and local people may be praying, so give them space.

Staying safe inside

Cave floors can be wet and uneven, and some paths up to cave entrances are steep. Wear shoes with good grip and bring a torch, as some chambers are dark. Do not go beyond lit or marked areas alone.
