Bang Berd Beach: Red Sand Bay in Bang Saphan Noi

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

Bang Berd is a small, curved bay in Bang Saphan Noi, near the southern edge of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Its sand is reddish-brown, a red cliff stands at one end, and fishing boats rest on the shore. It is a good half-day trip from Ban Krut if you like quiet beaches with real village life.

Where Bang Berd Beach is

The beach is at Ban Bang Berd in Sai Thong subdistrict, Bang Saphan Noi district. It faces the Gulf of Thailand about 30 km south of Ban Krut. Rocky headlands close off both ends of the bay, which gives it a calm, private feel.

Red sand and the red cliff

Unlike the pale sand of most Gulf beaches, Bang Berd's sand is reddish-brown, coloured by minerals from the local soil and rock. At the village end of the bay stands Pha Daeng, a dark red cliff. Iron in the rock layers gives it that colour, and it glows in strong sunlight.

What to do

This is a beach for slow walks, photos and watching the sky change at sunrise and late afternoon. The headlands shelter the bay, so the waves are usually gentle. You can watch small-scale fishing, boat repairs and seafood being sold straight from the boats. It is rarely crowded.

A taste of local history

Bang Berd was once known across Thailand for its watermelons, which were large, sweet and bright red inside. They grew on a farm linked to Mom Chao Sithiporn Kridakara, a well-known figure in Thai farming. Few are grown today, but locals are still proud of the name.

How to get there

By car, follow Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) to the Huai Sak junction at about km 425. Turn onto Route 3497 and drive about 16 km. By bus, take a Bangkok to Bang Saphan Noi bus to the Huai Sak junction, then a motorcycle taxi. By train, get off at Huai Sak or Bang Saphan Noi station and use local transport.

Nearby beaches and sights

Mae Ramphueng Bay is about 14 km away and Bo Thong Lang Bay about 18 km. Ban Krut Beach and Wat Thang Sai on Khao Thong Chai are about 30 km north. Combine two or three of them in one day by car or scooter.

Frequently asked questions
