Ban Krut Beach: a quiet guide to the village and coast

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

Ban Krut is a small fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand, in the Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. It sits roughly 160 km south of Hua Hin, yet it feels a world away. There are no big bars and no jet-ski rows, just a long sandy beach, a golden hilltop temple and fresh seafood. This independent guide (we are not a hotel and take no bookings) helps you decide if Ban Krut and the wider Bang Saphan coast suit you.

Where is Ban Krut?

Ban Krut lies in Thong Chai subdistrict, Bang Saphan district, in the south of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. This is the long, thin province where the Gulf of Thailand comes within about 11 km of the Myanmar border. Bang Saphan district has seven subdistricts. Bang Saphan Noi district lies to its south, and Thap Sakae to its north. By rail, Ban Krut is about 370 km from Bangkok.

What the village is like

The name comes from the makrut (kaffir) lime trees that once grew along the shore. Fishing is still the heart of daily life, and you can watch small boats land their catch early in the morning. Visitors describe the place as a quiet village rather than a resort town. Thai families drive down from Bangkok at weekends and on holidays, and the beach empties again on Monday.

The beach

Ban Krut Beach runs beside a coastal road lined with coconut palms. Sources give its length as anything from about 8 km to 12 km, depending on where they start counting. The sand slopes gently and the Gulf water here is usually calm, so swimming is possible in many spots. Shade is limited to palms and restaurant umbrellas, so bring sun protection.

Things to do in Ban Krut

Climb or drive up Khao Thong Chai to Wat Thang Sai for wide views over the bay. Take a boat trip to Koh Thalu for snorkelling. Visit the quieter bays of Mae Ramphueng and Bo Thong Lang, the cave temple of Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong, or the waterfalls inland. Many visitors simply rent a scooter and explore the empty beaches north and south of the village.

How to get to Ban Krut from Bangkok and Hua Hin

Ban Krut has its own station on the Southern Line, close to the village. Long-distance trains now leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Bangkok, and the trip takes about 5 to 7 hours. From Hua Hin the train takes about 2 to 3 hours. By car, take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) south and turn off towards Ban Krut at about km 382. Buses heading to Bang Saphan Noi can drop you at the Ban Krut junction. Check which trains stop at Ban Krut before you book.

When to go

Local guides suggest November to April, when the weather is usually calmer and the skies clearer. Weekends and Thai public holidays are the busiest times. On weekdays, even in high season, you may have long stretches of beach to yourself.
