Nature of Ban Krut: Coast, Forest and Climate
Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings
Ban Krut sits on one of the narrowest parts of Thailand. Between the sea and the mountains lie coconut groves, fishing villages, swamp forest and hill streams. Knowing a little about the land helps you enjoy it and plan around the weather.
Between the Gulf and the hills
Prachuap Khiri Khan province is a long, thin strip on the Kra Isthmus. At one point it is only about 11 km from the Gulf of Thailand to the Myanmar border. To the west rise the Tenasserim hills, known in Thai as the Tanao Si range. Bang Saphan district covers about 868 square kilometres between those hills and the sea.
Coast and beaches
The shore near Ban Krut is long and sandy, with gentle slopes into the sea. Coconut and casuarina trees shade parts of the beach road. Rocky headlands break the coast into bays such as Mae Ramphueng and Bo Thong Lang. Further south, at Bang Berd, iron-rich rock tints the sand and cliffs red.
Forests, swamps and islands
Behind the coast, the Mae Ramphueng area holds peat swamp forest, now part of the planned Ao Siam National Park. Offshore, sea turtles nest on Koh Thalu, and a rare coastal plant grows on its tip. In the hills, forest parks such as Huai Yang shelter gibbons, langurs, barking deer and serow. Forest is under pressure: Bang Saphan Noi lost about 16 percent of its primary forest between 2002 and 2020.
Farming and fishing
Coconuts are one of the province's main crops. Along Ban Krut Beach, fishing communities dry fish and squid for sale. The province's symbols reflect this land: its tree and flower is the rayan, and its fish is the milkfish.
Climate and seasons
Long-term weather data for Hua Hin, to the north, gives a rough guide. There, average highs are around 32°C. February is the driest month and October the wettest. Local guides suggest November to April for calmer seas and clearer skies at Ban Krut.
