Eating in Ban Krut: seafood, markets and local dishes

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

Food in Ban Krut is simple, fresh and mostly Thai. Small boats land their catch early in the morning, and seafood restaurants line the beach road. You will not find big food courts or chain restaurants here. This guide covers what to expect, a few useful tips and where to go when you want more choice. We name no restaurants and take no paid listings.

Seafood by the sea

Ban Krut is known for simple seafood restaurants along the beach road, many with sea views. Much of the seafood comes from nearby fishing communities. Evening is the classic time to eat, when the heat drops and the sea breeze picks up. The quieter bay of Mae Ramphueng also has seafood restaurants facing the water.

Dried fish and squid

Along the coast, fishing communities dry fish and squid for sale. You will see stalls selling them along the beach road and on the way to the bays. They are two well-known local products and make an easy snack or gift to take home.

The local market

Near the middle of the beach road you are close to small shops, cafés and the local market. Market days and hours change, so ask locally where and when the next market is. Bring cash.

Spice and ordering tips

Food here is mostly Thai and can be spicy. Ask for 'mai phet' (not spicy) if you prefer milder food.

Seafood straight from the boats

At Bang Berd, about 30 km south, you can watch small-scale fishing and boat repairs, and see seafood sold straight from the boats. At the small bay of Bo Thong Lang, a few stalls and beachfront restaurants sell seafood and cold drinks.

When you want more choice

For the widest choice of food, head north to Hua Hin. Its night market is known for seafood cooked to order, and Cicada Market is an open-air arts and food market. Prachuap Khiri Khan town, a small, walkable seaside town, also has more places to eat than Ban Krut.
