Things to do in Ban Krut and Bang Saphan
Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings
Ban Krut and the Bang Saphan coast pack a lot into a small area: quiet beaches, an island reef, hilltop and cave temples, waterfalls and old village crafts. Use this list to plan your days. Each place has its own full guide on this site.
Beaches
Ban Krut Beach is the long main strand, lined with palms and a coastal road. Mae Ramphueng is a long, calm bay further south, and Bo Thong Lang is a small, shallow, almost round cove. Near Bang Saphan Yai, Suan Luang beach is popular for kayaking and lazy days. Far south in Bang Saphan Noi, Bang Berd has reddish sand and a red cliff.
Islands and the sea
Koh Thalu, with the rocks of Koh Sang and Koh Sing, offers shallow coral that beginners can enjoy from the surface. Boat trips leave from the Bang Saphan coast. The islands are part of the planned Ao Siam National Park.
Temples and caves
Wat Thang Sai on Khao Thong Chai has a nine-spired golden chedi and a large Buddha facing the sea. South of Bang Saphan town, Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong is a cave temple with a horse-head rock and a sacred spring. In Bang Saphan Noi, Tham Khao Phasadu is a quiet pair of limestone caves.
Forests and waterfalls
Sai Khu Waterfall drops through nine tiers in the hills west of Bang Saphan. Huai Yang Waterfall National Park lies further north. On the coast, Pa Klang Ao forest is the base of the new Ao Siam National Park and offers simple camping.
Gold panning and village crafts
Bang Saphan is famous in Thailand for its gold. Villagers still pan for it in the Klong Thong stream at Ban Pa Ron. In the village of Ban Huai Kriab, a weaving group makes black-and-white rattan baskets and runs several small shops.
Day trips further away
Head north to the Wa Ko science park and aquarium, Ao Manao and Prachuap Khiri Khan town. Hua Hin, about 160 km north, makes a lively contrast with its night market, hilltop temples and long beach.
