Bang Saphan Yai beach and town
Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings
Bang Saphan Yai is a fishing village with its own railway station, a short way south of Ban Krut. It is small and relaxed, with simple beachfront bamboo bungalows, guesthouses and a few bars and restaurants. It also makes an easy base for boat trips to Koh Thalu. Here is what to expect and what is close by.
The village and the beach
Bang Saphan Yai has simple beachfront bamboo bungalows and guesthouses rather than big hotels. A few bars and restaurants face the sea. Suan Luang beach, just south of the village, is popular for kayaking and paddleboarding, and for slow, lazy days.
The station
Bang Saphan Yai station is on the Southern Line, and it is the stop for the Suan Luang beach area. If you arrive by train, staying near the station saves a taxi ride. Not all trains stop here, so check the official State Railway of Thailand (SRT) site before you book.
Boat trips to Koh Thalu
Koh Thalu is the island most people come to see from here. Boat trips take you out for snorkelling over shallow coral when the sea allows. The island is part of the planned Ao Siam National Park, so rules may change. Read our Koh Thalu snorkelling guide for how a trip works.
Nearby bays: Mae Ramphueng and Bo Thong Lang
Between Ban Krut and Bang Saphan Yai lie two calmer bays. Mae Ramphueng has a road beside the sand and seafood restaurants facing the water. Bo Thong Lang is small and shallow, with a few stalls. Both suit families who want gentle water.
A cave temple and waterfalls
Wat Khao Tham Ma Rong is a hillside cave temple just south of Bang Saphan town, only a few minutes by car from Bang Saphan Yai. Its horse-head rock gives the temple its name. For waterfalls, Sai Khu is inland: drive about 8 km past the Bang Saphan Yai junction on Phetkasem Road (around km 404), turn towards Ban Pong Ko and continue about 11 km.
Bang Saphan Yai or Ban Krut?
Choose Bang Saphan Yai for simple beach huts and easy boat trips to Koh Thalu. Choose Ban Krut for its long beach road, Wat Thang Sai on the hill and more places to stay. The two are close, so you can easily visit one from the other.
